When people think of reapers they are often thinking of the human world’s cartoonish version of a soul collector—an evil black-robed skeleton armed with a scythe—but the term reaper encompasses any supernatural being with dominion over the dead, including not only soul collectors but banshees, reanimators and necromancers.
Banshees: Their cry can foretell the death of anyone baring the blood of the originals, can stun their enemies and, in some cases, can kill. It is said the Morrigan’s banshee could scream the soul from its body.
Necromancers: Necromancers possess the ability to pull the soul back through the veil. They can restore the soul to a body and control the soul of anybody they’ve restored. Necromancers also possess the ability to control the soulless.
Soul Collectors: Collectors act as a portal between the living and the dead. They allow the soul to cross over after death.
Reanimators: Reanimators can raise the corpses of the dead and control them. Some even possess the ability to temporarily restore a soul but it will soon cross back over as they lack the magical ability necessary to anchor the soul to the body.
There was a time when reapers were as common as witches and shifters but when the Grove came to power, reapers began to disappear; some moved into the shadow realm—the in-between that exists between the living and the dead—the place some humans refer to as purgatory. With banshees and necromancers disappearing, reanimators were taken under ‘protection’ by the Grove. Only collectors were allowed to remain free as soul collectors must be allowed to carry the souls across the veil to keep from offsetting the natural order. The Grove must always maintain the balance.
Reapers are empathetic creatures. They are tuned into a higher frequency which allows them to communicate with the dead and align their energy with others. They often feel things so strongly that some choose to disconnect and build a wall to protect themselves. Some channel those feelings into creative pursuits such as art or music. They are often willing to forgive a multitude of sins as their unique insight into the human soul allows them to see the good in even the worst creatures however, while they take most things in stride, they cannot abide liars or betrayal. Each time you betray a reaper’s trust, it makes it harder and harder for them to forgive.
