witch

Definition:
Witch is an all-encompassing term for those who have been gifted with an ability to do magic. While witch is still the term used to describe those with an ability to do nature based magic—magic that must be given to them through tributes to the gods—those whose powers come from elsewhere prefer to separate themselves from the term witch. This is most often the case with two types of witches in particular: wizards and alchemists.
ABILITIES

Witches: Witches cannot practice magic without a tribute to the gods. No matter the type of magic (healing, hexing, etc.) they must follow a ritual which will involve a tribute or sacrifice.
Wizards: Wizards practice ancestral magic and therefore have no need to call for the gods to intervene. Wizards are most often direct descendants of powerful practitioners from an unbroken magical lineage.
Conjurers: Conjurers are rare practitioners who are able to infuse magic into inanimate objects through the use of a coven. Some very rare conjurers are able to create dark or light objects without the use of a coven.
Alchemists: Like wizards, alchemists have no need for rituals or sacrifice. Alchemists are extraordinarily rare and possess the innate ability to transform objects, bending the elements and the laws of physics to affect the changes they seek.
Animancer: An animancer is a practitioner of soul magic. They possess similar abilities as a necromancer only while necromancers have dominion over the soulless and the dead, animancers have the ability to influence the souls of the living or those dead still in possession of their souls.

HISTORY

Witches can trace their history back centuries and were once revered by humans for their ability to intercede on their behalf with the gods. When the gods turned their backs on this world, the witches began to split, some choosing to use their magic to help others while others used it to further their own selfish needs. Three hundred years ago, a group of witches sacrificed thirteen humans in an attempt to get their hands on the one type of magic denied them: death magic. The Morrigan cursed all supernatural creatures and made it so that in order for a person to inherit their magical talents another must die. Despite this, the Grove favored the witches and allowed them inside their inner circle and created a sort of elitist mentality among many of the witches who saw themselves as being superior to other supernatural factions. When Ember’s mother was in power in Belle Haven, their local council included representatives from all factions, but when the incident occurred twelve years ago, the Grove interceded, placing Allister Talbot at the head of the witches’ council and removing all magical texts from all supernatural creatures except for the witches. Even today, there is tension between the witches and most other factions as they are the only ones with access to the knowledge that dates back to the beginning of time.
CHARACTERISTICS

While a witch’s talents vary, all are in tune with the vibrations of the universe which allows them to practice magic as a group. Witches are often well read as they are the only faction with access to the ancient texts. Witches are most often extremely intelligent, cunning and tech savvy.
